About

I turn ambiguous problems into running systems.

Art Nikitin

I am an engineering director and hands-on architect based in Toronto, Canada. My work covers enterprise modernization, data platforms, AI adoption, and the teams that deliver them. I have sat in enough executive briefings and engineering reviews to translate between the two without losing anything on the way.

I studied psychology, neuroscience, and behaviour before I moved into tech. My first work was in education. That background still shapes how I lead technical work: I pay attention to incentives, decision-making, and the gaps between what people ask for and what they need.

I stay hands-on. Architecture reviews, proofs of concept, implementation planning, and production support are part of the job, not beneath it.

Operating principles

Ownership
I find where the breakdown is — strategy, process, or code — and fix it.
Scale
I build for where the business is going, not where it is.
Security
I design security from an attacker's point of view.
Automation
I build systems that replace entire manual workflows, not just individual tasks.
Alignment
I make sure what engineering builds is what the business asked for.

Where I have worked

Two careers share this timeline: engineering, and teaching that became leadership. Press the button to see them separately.

  1. 2025 — now

    Engineering Director · Fourth Dimension

    • Ran an internal innovation lab and a mentorship-driven delivery model.
    • Directed a billing portal migration serving more than a million customers, with no disruption.
    • Sat on the enterprise design council; stayed hands-on in reviews and proofs of concept.
  2. 2025

Principal Architect & Engineering Lead · Fourth Dimension

    • Championed secure GenAI adoption for a major insurance client through AWS Bedrock.
    • Led distributed Canada and India engineering teams.
    • Replaced week-long manual deployments with automated CI/CD.
  3. 2024

    Engineering Lead · Fourth Dimension

    • Led architecture and delivery of a governed AWS analytics platform.
    • Built major parts of it myself: ETL, validation flows, Tableau integration.
    • Established a coaching culture through pairing and shadow leadership.
  4. 2023 — 2024

Senior Full Stack Lead Engineer · Fourth Dimension

    • Delivered AWS-native enrollment pipelines supporting more than a million members.
    • Expanded from implementation into solution design and stakeholder advisory.
  5. 2022 — 2023

Senior Full Stack Lead Engineer · Eon Media

    • Took the keystone product from unfinished to soft-launch-ready.
    • Advised the CEO on product direction and technical recovery.
  6. 2018 — 2022

Head Teacher & Lead Developer · Georgia English

    • Taught, trained new teachers, and built the software the school ran on.
    • Python tools, web applications, and learning games for real classrooms.
  7. 2014 — 2020

    Freelance Developer · Independent

    • Built websites for friends, family, and small businesses.
    • Learned to ship for real people with real deadlines.
  8. McMaster University

B.Sc. Psychology, Neuroscience and Behaviour · McMaster University

    • How people learn, decide, and communicate. I use it every day.
